Ten years ago, I was a beginner, wondering how to find “papaya, guava, lemongrass, and just a hint of cat pee” in my sauvignon blanc. I took courses: I hold the Diploma in Wine & Spirits (DWS) from the Wine & Spirits Education Trust; I am a Certified Wine Educator (CWE) through the Society of Wine Educators; and have a sommelier certificate from the Sommelier Society of America. These represent years of study, but all you really need to understand wine is your nose and mouth. I have come to specialize in the senses as the easiest, the purely personal way, to enjoy wine and food.
